Stellar Physics

Research fields: Be stars, hot stars. In 1974, co-author (with S. Køí¾) of the binary hypothesis of the Be phenomenon. Since then, concentrated on complex research into hot stars. In 1983 called attention to non-sinusoidal rapid light variations of Be stars as a measure of their rotational periods; followed by a number of studies related to rapid spectral and light changes of hot stars. Investigation of hot (especially Be and pulsating) components in binaries and work on standardization of photometric data from various sources. Recently: studies of hot emission-line binaries, co-discoverer of the binary nature of the prototype Be star ? Cas, co-author of a new binary hypothesis of the formation of Be envelopes. 1964 graduated from Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University, Prague. 1969 PhD in Astrophysics (supervisor M. J. Plavec). Since 1964 staff member of the Stellar Department (summer student since 1959), part-time since 1999. Since 1999 Director of the Astronomical Institute of Charles University in Prague, since 2002 associate professor of Charles University. Member of Com. 42, 27 and 29 of the IAU, member of IAPPPC, elected member of the Organizing Committee of the Working Group on Be stars (1979-1985, 1991-1996), member of the Organizing Committee of the IAU Com. 27 (1997-2003).
