Contents of the supplement


We present here an overview of the development of the corona above NOAA active region 7270, August 28-29, 1992, in the form of a summary movie showing the various features detailed in the enclosures below (Courtesy of David E. McKenzie). In this movie (which starts at 07:16 UT on August 28 and ends at 06:08 on August 29) the east limb of the Sun has been rotated to the top of the image. Note that there is an alternating brightness in this movie, which results from the use of both AlMg and Al.1 X-ray analysis filters. These have different exposure times and spectral responses. Please note the jet, the expanding filamentary structure of the arch system, the dimming of the corona above the event, the formation of the postflare loop system - seen approximately side-on - and finally the multiple spikes ("mini-streamers") that we associate with transient solar-wind flow.

  • Enclosure 1 a-f :
    A sequence of images which show a jet above AR 7270, starting at 18:39 UT on 28 August 1992. This demonstrates that the young AR 7270 was already quite active when still hidden behind the eastern solar limb.

  • Enclosure 2 a-f :
    A sequence of images showing the expanding arch structure, first seen at 21:23 UT on 28 August 1992. The dimming of the corona above the active region, together with the outward motion of the filaments of the arch, suggests strongly that this was the beginning phase of a coronal mass ejection.

  • Enclosure 3 a-j :
    The growth of the system of post-flare loops which developed behind the expanding arch structure. The series starts at 23:15 UT on 28 August 1992 and ends at 15:16 UT on 29 August 1992.

  • Enclosure 4 a-m :
    The development of the fan of rays, starting after the expanding arch structure swept out the preceding coronal structures, and continuing as long as the configuration stayed recognizable in Yohkoh images. The series starts at 23:51 UT on 28 August 1992 and ends at 23:29 UT on 29 August 1992. All the images taken with the 2668 msec exposures have spatial resolution of 5 arc sec, while the last three images taken with the 668 msec exposures have spatial resolution of 10 arc sec.

  • Enclosure 5 :
    Color version of Figure 9 in the paper: maps of temperature (left) and emission measure (right) in the corona above AR 7270 composed from Al.1 and AlMg images made between 02:42 and 03:01 UT on 29 August 1992. Both scales are logarithmic, the EM values are given per pixel. 4x4 pixels were summed to get better statistics so that the spatial resolution is 20 arc sec.
