Program ADRIDL is used for computing spectroheliograms from spectra observed at the spectroheliograph of the Astronomical Observatory of the Coimbra University. The program and all necessary subroutines are stored in the directory C:\ADRIDL21D_DIR, C:\ADRIDL3_DIR and C:\ADRIDL31E_DIR The newest version 4 is stored in C:\ADRIDL4_DIR Program version: ARDIDL 4.0 ---------------------------- This version newly includes spectroheliograms in the blue and red wings of H-alpha, i.e., -0.5 A and +0.5 A from the line centre. The asymmetric intensity distribution on the disk and spurious horizontal structures (strips) crossing the disk are corrected. By default, the asymmetric intensity distribution is corrected in all spectroheliograms and the horizontal structures are corrected in all spectroheliograms except K3. The correction for K3 can be switched on setting "K3" in the RUN CORRECTIONS mode. The correction for horizontal structures can be switched off for all spectroheliograms setting "NO" in the RUN CORRECTIONS mode. The asymmetric intensity distribution is always corrected. If you want to avoid these corrections, use the previous program version ADRIDL 01.1 in the directory C:\ADRIDL1_DIR. The version ADRIDL 0.0 includes the computation of Dopplergrams in the line H-alpha. The sensitivity (velocity step) is 570 m/s and the range of velocities is +/- 15 km/s. The used unit is m/s. Time setting: The clock of the computer must be set always to UT, no change to summer time. INPUT The input data are usually found in C:\12B_ARCH in the following form: A measurement is stored in a subdirectory with name YYMMDDNN (YY - year, MM - month, DD - day, NN - measurement number) This subdirectory must contain a darkfield file (DC*.SP), a flatfield file (FF*.SP) and files with spectra (SP*.dig) PROGRAM HANDLING START - click on the icon ADRIDL.bat and wait until the full screen "ADRIDL" (IDL3) appears. The program offers two basic run modes: SINGLE RUN - processing of one measurement MULTIPLE RUN - processing of all measurements in a directory After clicking on the SINGLE RUN or MULTIPLE RUN, a window appears where you find and select a measurement (subdirectory YYMMDDNN). In case of MULTIPLE RUN, all other measurements present in the directory together with the selected measurement will be processed. In the MULTIPLE RUN mode, the default setting of corrections of the coelostat position, the hour and the strip corrections cannot be changed. ------- WARNING - selecting a wrong directory leads to an error that is not shown in the window. Close window IDL3 and exit IDL. ------- RUN CORRECTIONS - only after the SINGLE RUN is done, corrections of the coelostat position, of the hour, and the options for the strip correction can be selected by clicking on RUN CORRECTIONS. A window appears showing current values and offering the possibilities of changes. Click on them to make a change. Clicking on RESET restores the original values. Click on DONE to re-compute the measurement. When the processing is finished, 11 images of the spectroheliogram in different grey scales appear on the screen. In case of MULTIPLE RUN they disappear in 5 sec. and the processing of a new measurement starts. In case of SINGLE RUN or RUN CORRECTIONS you can click on the images to zoom. Close the zoom window by clicking on the enlarged image. Click outside the images to return to the main screen. STOP - Click on EXIT on the main screen and then close [X] the IDL. When running, it is not possible to stop the program. In case of a wrong measurent, a window with ERROR appears. Close [X] IDL, move the measurement to the subdirectory "bad_measurements" and start the program again. OUTPUT The output includes for each measurement 2 spectroheliograms ("continuum" and line centre) stored as 1+1 FITS files, 1+1 TXT files and 5+6 JPEG pictures. In case of H-alpha, a Dopplergram in the FITS format + 1 TXT file + 1 JPEG picture are added. In JPEG, the Doppler velocity range is limited to +/- 4 km/s. FITS files contain spectroheliograms/Dopplergrams in 16-bit arrays with headers; TXT files contain the FITS headers for easy reading; JPEG pictures are in different grey scales and serve for quick look. The output is written to the directory C:\12B_PIC_II For each measurement, a subdirectory with the name YYMMDDNN is created The file names are in the form YYMMDDNNLL.fits, YYMMDDNNLL.txt and YYMMDDNNLLS.jpg (YY - year, MM - month, DD - day, NN - measurement number, LL - wavelength code, S - greyscale code) Wavelength codes: CN - H-alpha continuum HA - H-alpha line centre HABLU - H-alpha -0.5 A HARED - H-alpha +0.5 A K1 - Ca II K1 (line wing) K3 - Ca II K3 (line centre) Greyscale codes: B,D,N,P,W (from darkest to brightest) and Z N - linear scale, Z - equalized image (median filter) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- HISTORY: Upgrade in September 2010: - version 02.1D is verified for standard use - an error message is given by DIG_DISK when the intensity is as low (clouds) that it inhibits the determination of vertical disc diameter - a bug is removed in DISKCOR3, so that the determination of threshold intensity at the limb is more stable - the FITS header is modified and extended according to the requirements of BASS 2000 - a fast version 02.1D.FAST, where the equalized images Z are not calculated, is available. Output of the fast version is written to C:\12B_PIC_III. written on 24 September 2010 ========================================================================= 18 August 2011: - a bug is removed in DISKCOR3, so that the determination of threshold intensity at the limb is more stable: * The correction of September 2010 was based on maximum intensity. This caused a crash of program in case of a strong Ca II K3 flare. The new correction is based on the mean intensity of the whole spectroheliogram to be less sensitive to extreme brightenings. 15 October 2012: A change is made in DIG_FLAT to distinguish correctly the Ca II K and H-alpha lines, also when the observation is made near the horizon and telluric lines appear in the vicinity of H-alpha. ========================================================================= Version: ARDIDL 3.0 ------------------- The program and all necessary subroutines are stored in the directory C:\ADRIDL3_DIR 30 September 2014: ------------------ A bug in DIG_MAIN3 causing multiple rotation of the N-S solar axis in case of use 'run corrections' is fixed. The 'run_corrections' mode is stable now. 6 October 2014: --------------- A special version ADRIDL 3.1E was finished. In this version, spectroheliograms of incomplete solar disc (partial eclipse, clouds) can be made. Because many important corrections for geometry and strips cannot be made, the solar disc may not be circular and it is not centered (the gravity centre of the partial disc is set to the image centre). Dopplergrams cannot be calculated because it is not possible to determine the zero velocity from partial solar disc. 7 October 2014: --------------- (i) DIG_FLAT was changed to DIG_FLAT2 with the capability to average several flatfield files. (ii) STRIPCOR was updated: the intensity reference surface matches better the actual mean intensity in the spectroheliogram, resulting in suppressing spurious dark strips caused by bright active regions located near the solar meridian. 8 October 2014: --------------- The standard version ADRIDL 3.0 and the special eclipse version ADRIDL 3.1E for disturbed solar disc were released for standard use. ======================================================================= 10 October 2017: ---------------- Version ADRIDL 4.0 was released for standard use. ------------------ This version makes it possible to compute spectroheliograms in the H-alpha wings -0.5 A and +0.5 A from the line centre. =========================================================================
